A Family Studio Built on Love, Resilience, and the Joy of Creating Together

Burst of Butterflies Create & Paint Studio is more than an art studio — it’s a story of family, healing, creativity, and community. Three generations — Peggy Peters, daughters Cheryl Tisland and Theresa “Risa” Buglio, and Cheryl’s son Lucas Tisland — built this studio with a shared dream: a place where people of all ages could slow down, connect, and discover the joy of creating.

But the journey to get here began with something life-changing.

đź’› How It Started: Turning a Family Challenge Into a Creative Purpose

In 2013, Theresa (“Risa”) was involved in a devastating accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and 14 weeks in the hospital. Her recovery would be long, and her life would be permanently changed. As a family, it became clear that long hours in their former careers were no longer compatible with providing the care, support, and presence she needed.

So they did what strong families do:
They came together and imagined a new path forward.

Peggy — long-time canvas painter.
Cheryl — with a background in software engineering and industrial arts.
Lucas — a young ceramic artist already falling in love with clay.

As they explored possibilities, one idea stood out:
A creative space where families, friends, and community could gather, make memories, and experience the healing power of art.

Art became therapy for Risa. She began painting again, often and joyfully.
And in just over a year of planning, Burst of Butterflies opened in December 2015 in Historic Downtown Chandler.

💜 In Loving Memory of Theresa “Risa” Buglio

Risa was the heart and inspiration behind Burst of Butterflies. Her strength, creativity, and resilience helped spark the dream that became our family studio. She loved creating art, and she brought joy and connection into every room she entered.

Risa passed away in January 2022.
But her spirit is woven into the walls of this studio — into the laughter of guests, the joy of creativity, and the sense of calm that comes from making something beautiful with your own hands.

Every brushstroke, every clay piece, and every memory made inside our studio is a quiet tribute to her.
She will always be part of our story.
